RCMP investigators and the RCMP underwater recovery team are heading to the site of a helicopter crash in northern Manitoba. There is still no official word on the fate of the pilot.

Crews in the air spotted what's believed to be wreckage of the missing helicopter near Gull Lake, about 50 km west of Gillam, shortly before noon on Tuesday.

A Bell 206 chopper was supposed to pick up a group of people in a remote area near Gillam, about 1,100 km north of Winnipeg. It left Monday afternoon with only the pilot on board but didn’t return later in the day when scheduled.

A Hercules aircraft from CFB Winnipeg began searching the area Monday night.

RCMP said wreckage was located shortly before noon Tuesday.
