Mtis leader Louis Riel was honoured in a special ceremony at the St. Boniface Cathedral Sunday morning.

The event marked the 123rd anniversary of his death.

He was hung for treason on Nov. 16, 1885 in Regina.

Mtis leaders and Manitoba politicians laid wreaths at Riel's gravesite in the St. Boniface Cemetery on Sunday.

This week, the poems that Riel wrote before he was executed will be auctioned off in Toronto.

Riel gave the four English-language poems to one of his jailers before he died.

They are expected to fetch around $5,000.
