Winnipeg mayoral hopeful Judy Wasylycia-Leis held her first campaign announcement on the steps of her North End home.
“I've heard nothing but people saying, ‘I've lost trust and faith,’ and you can't blame them," she said.
Wasylycia-Leis is promising a more open government, if elected, and inviting the media to her home was just the first step. She also disclosed her personal assets and said she'll create a new watchdog to hold elected officials accountable.
It would add “Ethics Commissioner” to the city auditor’s powers, giving the office authority to conduct value-for-money audits at the request of council, or based on citizen complaints.
“If I’m elected, I am committed to introducing a series of measures that will open city hall to the citizens that we are privileged to represent and ensure that their interests come first,” she said.
Wasylycia-Leis also promised to make her calendar available online, disclose any expenses she incurs as mayor, and hold open office hours to the Public one Saturday a month.
