The University of Winnipeg says a new 14-storey apartment complex will add more living options downtown for students, families and individuals.

On Monday, dignitaries hammered in ceremonial nails to mark the official start of construction.

The building will contain 102 apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms.

46 apartments will be offered with affordable rents for university students with families, and 32 of those will be offered at a rate directly geared towards income.

The remaining 56 units will be offered to the community at large.

The project is receiving support from the province in the form of a $30-million loan guarantee, PST credits, and an operating subsidy from Manitoba Housing for the affordable units.

Construction of the apartment complex is expected to be completed by the fall of 2016.
